Healthy Communities Massachusetts Institute 2001

Healthy Communities Massachusetts is pleased to announce the awarding of full and partial
scholarships to four new communities that will participate in the HCM Institute in 2001. The
communities chosen are
Somerville, Marlboro, Barre and Martha’s Vineyard. Each community submitted an excellent application to the Institute, which showed interest in healthy communities, the diversity of the teams, grassroots engagement, a history of collaboration, community strengths and a commitment to moving forward.

Somerville’s team is led by Genita Johnson, of the Somerville Health Department, and will build on the work of the Somerville Community Health Agenda. One of their goals is to build a team of leaders for healthy communities in Somerville.

Denise Frizzell, of Choices Wellness Community Center, leads
Marlboro’s team. The Marlboro team stated that “...we hope to accomplish positive change by uniting citizens, organizations, and all stakeholders around a shared vision of our City.”

Joe Stenger, M.D., of the Barre Health Center, leads the
Barre team, which has been meeting
over the past year to improve their beautiful rural community. They have already held some public meetings and begun their community visioning process. Suzanne Cashman, from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, has been working with this team.

The Martha’s Vineyard team has been working together for the past three years to build a healthy community and specifically to develop an island-based health plan. Their team leader is Ned Robinson-Lynch, of Martha’s Vineyard Community Services. Their team includes the CEO of the hospital, a Selectman, and their County Administrator.

We welcome all these teams to the Institute and look forward to our work with them in the year
ahead.

Special thanks to our selection committee: Suzanne Cashman, Peter Lee, Gretchen Kinder, Pam Cruz and Michael Coughlin.
